Before you start

What you need

Before you edit any config, check these.

  • Checklist

    • A Postocial account. Start a free trial to get one.
    • A recent version of Cursor.
    • Social accounts connected in Postocial, and a workspace role that can create posts.
    • A browser for the one-time sign-in.
  • ~/.cursor/mcp.json

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "postocial": {
          "url": "https://app.postocial.com/mcp"
        }
      }
    }

    Use the same snippet in a project's .cursor/mcp.json to limit Postocial to that project.

Setup

Connect Postocial to Cursor

Add one entry to your MCP config, sign in once, and the agent can use Postocial in your chats.

  1. Open the MCP settings

    In Cursor, open Settings and go to MCP. Choose to add a new server, which opens your ~/.cursor/mcp.json file.

  2. Paste the configuration

    Add the postocial entry from the snippet above. If the file already lists servers, put it inside the existing mcpServers block, then save.

  3. Sign in to Postocial

    Cursor lists Postocial in the MCP settings and asks you to log in. Follow the prompt, sign in to Postocial and choose a workspace.

  4. Ask the agent

    Open the chat in Agent mode and ask: "List my Postocial accounts." Approve the tool call when Cursor asks.

Global or per project

Where to put the configuration

Cursor reads MCP servers from two places, and both take the same snippet.

Example prompts

Prompts to try in Cursor

Mention files with @ so the agent works from the real source, and say when you want drafts rather than scheduled posts.

  • Changelog to LinkedIn

    "@CHANGELOG.md Write a LinkedIn post about the three biggest changes in the latest release and save it as a Postocial draft."

  • Blog draft to short posts

    "Turn the blog post I have open into a Threads post under 500 characters and a Bluesky post under 300. Save both as drafts."

  • Choose the accounts

    "List my Postocial accounts. For this release I only want our LinkedIn page and our Facebook Page."

  • Schedule a file as a post

    "@launch/announcement.md Schedule this announcement to our LinkedIn page and Facebook Page for Wednesday at 9 a.m. Pacific."

  • Two-week plan in a file

    "Create social-plan.md with a two-week plan: date, time, account and post text. When I approve it, schedule every row."

  • Explain it for customers

    "Summarize this week's merged changes for customers who do not code, and draft a Facebook Page post from the summary."

  • Reddit announcement

    "Draft a Reddit post for our community subreddit about the tutorial in @docs/tutorials/import.mdx. Keep the title under 300 characters and save it as a draft."

Abilities and limits

How the Cursor agent works with your workspace

In Agent mode, Cursor can pair your project files with the Postocial tools, inside the workspace you picked.

  • Uses the files you mention with @, the file you have open and the rest of your project.
  • Calls Postocial to list your accounts, draft, schedule and queue posts, add media and read your analytics, and on Premium and higher plans to work in the inbox.
  • Shows each tool call in the chat and waits for your approval, unless you turn on auto-run.
  • Stays within your workspace role.

Troubleshooting

Fixes for common setup problems

Check the JSON first. A stray comma stops the whole file from loading.

  • Postocial shows an error in the MCP list

    Check that mcp.json is valid JSON, with no trailing commas, and that the URL matches the server URL exactly. Then turn the server off and on, or restart Cursor.

  • The agent never calls Postocial

    MCP tools run in Agent mode. Switch the chat to Agent, check that Postocial is enabled in the MCP settings, and mention Postocial in your request.

  • Cursor keeps asking you to log in

    Finish the sign-in in the browser and choose a workspace before you close the tab. If it still asks, restart Cursor and log in again.

  • The project file is ignored

    A project config must sit at .cursor/mcp.json in the folder you opened in Cursor, not in a subfolder.

  • Posts land at the wrong time

    Give a time zone in every request, such as "9 a.m. Pacific", and check the post on your Postocial calendar.

  • Scheduling is refused

    Your workspace role limits what the agent can do. Ask a workspace admin to check your role; roles are explained here.

FAQ

Questions about Postocial in Cursor

Cursor is made by Anysphere. Postocial is an independent product, not affiliated with Anysphere.

Do I need an API key to use Postocial in Cursor?

No. Cursor signs in with OAuth: you log in to Postocial and choose a workspace. Personal access tokens are for MCP clients that cannot sign in.

Can I commit .cursor/mcp.json to our repository?

Yes, as long as it only holds the server URL. Each teammate signs in with their own Postocial login, so their own role applies. Never put a token in a file you commit.

Will the agent schedule posts without asking me?

Not by default. Cursor asks before it runs a tool unless you turn on auto-run. For an extra check, ask for drafts and schedule them yourself in Postocial.

I use Cursor and Claude Code. Do I set this up twice?

Yes. Each tool keeps its own MCP settings. Use the same server URL in both and sign in once in each. See the Claude Code guide.

Do I need a paid Postocial plan?

Every plan includes the MCP server, and you can set it up during the free trial. A card is required to start the 7-day free trial. When the trial ends, we charge your card for the plan you picked, unless you cancel before.

Can the agent add images to posts?

Yes. The agent can attach files from your Postocial media library, or add an image or video to the library from a public link and use it in the post. Upload files from your computer to the media library first. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest posts need an image or video, so check the media in Postocial before the post goes out.

How do I turn Postocial off in Cursor?

Switch Postocial off in Cursor's MCP settings to pause it, or delete the postocial entry from mcp.json to remove it. Your drafts and scheduled posts stay in Postocial.

Keep launch posts next to the code

Start a free trial, connect your channels and add Postocial to mcp.json. The agent drafts and schedules when you ask.
