Best practices

Telegram best practices

What to keep in mind when you plan posts for a Telegram channel or group.

  • Mind the caption limit. Messages can hold 4,096 characters, but captions on photos and videos sent by a bot stop at 1,024. Put long text in its own post.
  • Keep videos under 50 MB. That is the upload limit for bots on Telegram's cloud Bot API, so compress large files first.
  • Write a clear description. You have 255 characters to tell people what your channel or group is for and how often you post.
  • Tag recurring formats. A hashtag such as #jobs or #events on every edition lets subscribers find them all later.

Platform limits

Telegram limits and media specs

The limits and sizes Telegram sets for text, images and video, with a source for each. Platforms change them often, so check before a big campaign.

About the text limit. Bot API messages hold 1 to 4,096 characters after entity parsing, and media captions 0 to 1,024. Telegram Premium users can write captions up to 4,096 characters in Telegram apps, but posts sent through a bot stay at 1,024. Albums group 2 to 10 photos or videos, and poll questions take 1 to 300 characters. The 255-character bio figure is the channel or group description. Personal bios are 70 characters, or 140 with Telegram Premium.

Hashtags. Telegram supports hashtags in groups and channels to keep messages organized. No hashtag limit is published.

Get connected

How to connect Telegram

Connect a channel or group under Social Accounts > Add account. The connect accounts guide lists what to check first. Managing an account for a client? Send a client invite link so they can connect it themselves, without sharing a password.

  1. Create your bot

In Telegram, open @BotFather, create a bot and copy its token. Then choose "Publish scheduled posts to a channel or group" in Add account, so posts go out under your own bot, in channels and groups.

  2. Make the bot an admin

In your channel or group, open Administrators and add your bot with permission to post messages. Then enter the @handle or t.me link, plus the bot token. A private group has no handle, so use its numeric ID.

  3. Set your time slots

Pick the weekly times posts should go out, then write and schedule your first message. See the posting schedule guide.

  4. Add a chat bot, if you want one

Optionally, choose "Connect a bot to chat & automate on Telegram" and paste a bot token from @BotFather to chat with people, run automations and send broadcasts to people who started the bot, skipping anyone who opted out. Included on Postocial's Premium and higher plans. See how to connect a Telegram bot.

Can Postocial post to both Telegram channels and groups?

Yes. Postocial publishes to Telegram channels and groups from the same composer and calendar as your other networks.

How long can a Telegram post be?

A text message can hold up to 4,096 characters. A caption on a photo or video sent by a bot is limited to 1,024, so put long text in a separate post.

What file sizes can I send to Telegram?

Photos sent through Telegram's Bot API can be up to 10 MB. Bots can upload files of up to 50 MB through the cloud Bot API, while people using the Telegram apps can send files of up to 2 GB, or 4 GB with Telegram Premium.

Can I reply to Telegram messages in Postocial?

Yes, on Postocial's Premium and higher plans, through a Telegram bot you connect. Messages people send to the bot arrive in the unified inbox, where you can answer them or let automations reply. You can also send broadcasts from the bot: they reach only people who started it and skip anyone who opted out. Comments in your channels and groups are not part of the inbox.

Can I schedule recurring Telegram posts?

Yes. Use repeat posts for weekly reminders or regular announcements, and RSS campaigns to post new articles from a feed.

Do hashtags work on Telegram?

Yes. Telegram supports hashtags in channels and groups, which helps subscribers find related messages. It publishes no limit on how many you can use.
