Best practices

LinkedIn best practices

Habits that help scheduled LinkedIn posts start conversations instead of being scrolled past.

  • Earn the "see more" click. LinkedIn shows only the start of a post, so put the insight or the question in the first line.
  • Use document posts for depth. A few slides can explain a framework better than a long block of text.
  • Size link images at 1200 × 627. That is LinkedIn's own guidance for link posts. Images under 200 pixels wide shrink to a small thumbnail.
  • Keep alt text short. LinkedIn accepts long image descriptions but recommends staying under 120 characters.
  • End with a real question. A specific question invites replies, so answer them while the post is active.

Platform limits

LinkedIn limits and media specs

The limits and sizes LinkedIn sets for text, images and video, with a source for each. Platforms change them often, so check before a big campaign.

  • LinkedIn character limits

    FieldMaximum
    Post3,000 characters
    Comment1,250 characters
    About section2,600 characters
    Public profile URL100 characters

About the text limit. LinkedIn Help puts the post limit at 3,000 characters and points longer writing to articles. Posts from LinkedIn Pages use the same composer. Through the API, image alt text can be up to 4,086 characters (LinkedIn recommends under 120). Polls take a question of up to 140 characters and 2 to 4 options of up to 30 characters each. Secondary sources put headlines at 220 characters, Page taglines at 120, Page descriptions at 2,000 and article titles at 150.

Hashtags. Hashtags can go in post text. The LinkedIn help pages we reviewed publish no hashtag limit. Stick to a few specific tags.

Questions about LinkedIn scheduling

Something else on your mind? Email us at hello@postocial.com.

Can I schedule posts to my LinkedIn profile and my company page?

Yes. Postocial connects LinkedIn personal profiles and LinkedIn pages, and you can post the same idea to both with different wording, at the same time or at different times.

How long can a LinkedIn post be?

Up to 3,000 characters. LinkedIn points anything longer to articles. Only the first lines show before "see more", so lead with your strongest sentence.

Can I post PDF carousels to LinkedIn?

Yes. Postocial supports LinkedIn document carousels, which publish as swipeable posts. LinkedIn accepts PDF, PPT, PPTX, DOC and DOCX documents of up to 100 MB and 300 pages.

Can I add a first comment to LinkedIn posts?

Yes. Write it in the composer and Postocial publishes it with the post. Use it for a link, a source or a question.

Can my team reply to LinkedIn comments in Postocial?

Yes, for LinkedIn pages, on Premium and higher plans. Comments on your page posts come into the unified inbox, where you can assign them, tag them, add internal notes and reply with saved replies or AI-suggested replies from your own AI key.

Can I choose who sees a LinkedIn post?

Yes. Set a post's visibility to Public or Connections. Connections shows a post from your profile to your connections only.

What image sizes work best on LinkedIn?

For link posts, LinkedIn recommends 1200 × 627 pixels. Image posts can use other ratios and show at full size with light padding. A page cover is 1512 × 256 and a page logo 400 × 400, each up to 3 MB.
