How to size, tag and pace posts for the dashboard.
- Size images 540 pixels wide. That width is not scaled down on the dashboard. Go up to 2048 × 3072 for a sharp click-through view.
- Keep GIFs light. Stay at or under 10 MB and 540 pixels wide. Under 3 MB, Tumblr does not compress them.
- Lead with your best tags. Only the first 30 tags on a post count in Tumblr search.
- Plan videos around daily caps. Tumblr allows 20 video uploads and 60 minutes of video per day.
- Spread posts out. A queue of time slots keeps a blog active through the day instead of in bursts.

The limits and sizes Tumblr sets for text, images and video, with a source for each. Platforms change them often, so check before a big campaign.

Tumblr character limits

A single text block holds up to 4,096 characters, and longer paragraphs are split automatically. Per-post limits: 50 mentions, 100 inline links, 10 link blocks, 30 image or GIF blocks on the web (10 in the apps), 10 audio blocks, and one uploaded video.
Hashtags. Tumblr uses post tags rather than in-text hashtags. Since March 19, 2024, the first 30 tags on a new post are indexed for site search, and in-blog search still uses 20. Tags can contain spaces and dashes but not double quotes.
