Best practices

Bluesky best practices

Small habits that suit how Bluesky counts and shows posts.

  • Count what you see. Bluesky limits posts to 300 graphemes, so most emoji count as one. Link to a longer piece when an idea needs more room.
  • Describe your images. The Bluesky app accepts alt text of up to 2,000 characters, so every image can have a full description.
  • Use your domain as your handle. A custom domain handle shows people that the account really belongs to your brand.
  • Choose clear hashtags. Tags in posts are clickable and searchable, so a few precise ones help people find you.

FAQ

Questions about Bluesky scheduling

Something else on your mind? Email us at hello@postocial.com.

How long can a Bluesky post be?

300 graphemes, which means characters as you see them, so most emoji count as one. The same limit applies to replies.

Can I answer Bluesky replies in Postocial?

Yes, on Premium and higher plans. Replies come into the unified inbox with your other conversations, where you can assign them, tag them and reply with saved replies or AI-suggested replies from your own AI key.

Can I post the same update to Bluesky, Threads, X and Mastodon?

Yes. Write it once, then adjust each version: 300 characters on Bluesky, 500 on Threads, 500 by default on Mastodon and 280 on X, where links and emoji count extra.

Do hashtags work on Bluesky?

Yes. Hashtags in your text become clickable tags of up to 64 characters each, and a post can carry up to 8 extra tags that do not appear in the text. Add those as hidden tags in the composer.

Can I label sensitive Bluesky posts?

Yes. Choose a content moderation label in the composer before a sensitive post goes out, so it carries the label on Bluesky.

Can I schedule Bluesky posts from Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes. Connect the Postocial MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code. Your assistant can then list your accounts and draft and schedule posts, within the permissions of your role.

What image sizes work on Bluesky?

Any aspect ratio works for post images. The official app resizes them to at most 4,000 pixels on the longest side and 2 MB. For your profile, use a 1000 × 1000 avatar and a 3000 × 1000 banner, each up to 1 MB.
