Best practices

TikTok best practices

What helps a scheduled video do well, within the limits TikTok sets for posts made through its API.

  • Hook in the first seconds. Open with the payoff or the question, not a logo or a slow intro.
  • Caption for search. Use the plain words your audience would type into TikTok search, with the most specific one first.
  • Check your length cap. Every creator can post 3-minute videos, and some accounts can post 5 or 10 minutes. Confirm yours before you schedule a longer cut.
  • Film vertical at 1080 × 1920. It fills the screen and needs no cropping.
  • Keep hashtags to a few. Hashtags count toward the caption limit, and a handful of relevant ones beats a long list.

TikTok limits and media specs

The limits and sizes TikTok sets for text, images and video, with a source for each. Platforms change them often, so check before a big campaign.

    Photo post title90 characters

About the text limit. The Content Posting API caps video captions at 2,200 UTF-16 runes. Photo posts have a title of up to 90 runes and a description of up to 4,000. Captions written in the TikTok app are widely reported at 4,000 characters (secondary sources), but anything posted through the API is held to 2,200. Hashtags and @mentions are part of the caption text.

Hashtags. The API picks out hashtags and @mentions in the caption, separated by spaces or new lines, and they use caption characters. TikTok's posting API docs give no hashtag count limit. A few relevant tags work better than long lists.

Can I schedule TikTok videos with Postocial?

Yes. Upload a finished video, write the caption, pick a time or add it to your queue, and Postocial publishes it to your TikTok account.

How long can a TikTok caption be?

Posts made through TikTok's API, which is how Postocial publishes, take captions of up to 2,200 characters, and hashtags and mentions count toward that total. The TikTok app itself is widely reported to allow 4,000.

How long can my TikTok videos be?

TikTok's API accepts videos of up to 10 minutes and 4 GB, but each account has its own cap: every creator can post 3-minute videos, and some can post 5 or 10 minutes. Videos can be MP4, WebM or MOV, and MP4 is recommended.

Can I post the same video to TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram?

Yes. Add the video once in the composer, select the accounts and give each network its own caption before you schedule it.

Do I get TikTok analytics in Postocial?

Yes. See how your TikTok account and each video perform, with the metrics TikTok makes available, next to your other accounts. TikTok accounts also get the best-times heatmap and a next best time to post.
