What counts toward the Bluesky limit

Bluesky counts graphemes: characters as people see them. A letter, a space, an emoji or a flag each count as one, which is exactly how this counter works. Behind the scenes a post must also stay under 3,000 bytes, a cap you’ll only meet with very emoji-heavy text.

Replies are posts too, with the same 300-character limit. Hashtags you type count toward the 300 and can be up to 64 characters each. A post can also carry up to eight extra tags that don’t appear in the text.

The bio has 256 characters and the display name 64, and the official app gives you up to 2,000 characters of alt text per image.

    Tips for Bluesky posts

    • Keep each post under 300 characters and split longer ideas into a thread.
    • Write alt text for every image, since the app gives you plenty of room.
    • Use a few clear hashtags. Tags are clickable and searchable.
    • Use a custom domain as your handle so people can see the brand owns the account.
    • Add caption files to videos so they work with the sound off.
