What counts toward the Tumblr limit
Tumblr’s overall limit is generous: a post, including its full reblog trail, can’t exceed 524,288 characters. The number you’ll actually meet is the block size. Posts are built from content blocks, and a single text block holds up to 4,096 characters; longer paragraphs are split automatically.
Other limits apply per post: 50 mentions, 100 inline links, 10 link blocks, 30 image or GIF blocks on the web (10 in the apps), 10 audio blocks and one uploaded video. Poll options can be up to 80 characters each, with 2 to 12 options.
Tags live in their own field, not in the post text. They can contain spaces and dashes but not double quotes.

Hashtags on Tumblr
Tumblr uses post tags rather than in-text hashtags. Since March 19, 2024, the first 30 tags on a new post are indexed for site search, and in-blog search still uses 20. Tags can contain spaces and dashes but not double quotes.
Tips for Tumblr posts
- Put the most important tags first, because only the first 30 count in site search.
- Write in paragraphs. Tumblr splits any block over 4,096 characters anyway.
- Stay within 100 inline links and 50 mentions per post.
- Spread posts across the day instead of publishing them in one burst.
- Plan video uploads around the daily caps of 20 videos and 60 minutes.
Publish Tumblr posts that fit, on schedule
Postocial publishes to your Tumblr blogs from the same calendar as your other networks, so a long-form Tumblr version can go out alongside short posts elsewhere.
