What counts toward the Instagram limit
Your caption counts every character, including spaces, line breaks, emoji, hashtags and @mentions. This tool counts characters as people see them, so a flag or an emoji with a skin tone is one character.
Three caption rules matter as much as the 2,200 total. Meta’s API allows up to 20 @mentions per caption. Instagram said in December 2025 that it would gradually cap captions on posts and Reels at five hashtags, even though Meta’s Graph API reference still lists 30. And a carousel has one caption for the whole post, because individual slides can’t have their own.
The bio is a separate field with a 150-character limit, and usernames stop at 30 characters. The same limits apply to business accounts connected through Facebook and to accounts using Instagram login.

Tips for Instagram posts
- Write the first line as the hook. The feed shows only the start of a caption before “more”.
- Use up to five focused hashtags, planning for Instagram’s new cap rather than the 30 the API still lists.
- Put line breaks between short paragraphs so a long caption stays readable.
- Use carousels for tutorials and before-and-after posts, and write one caption that works for every slide.
- Add alt text to image posts. Through the API it can be up to 1,000 characters.
