Instagram image sizes
| Use | Size (px) | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed post, square | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Size per Hootsuite. Via the API, feed images must be JPEG, up to 8 MB, 320 to 1440 px wide (scaled outside that range), with an aspect ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1. |
| Feed post, portrait | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | The tallest feed ratio the API accepts. |
| Feed post, landscape | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | The widest feed ratio the API accepts. |
| Profile grid preview | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 | Per Hootsuite, the profile grid now previews posts at 3:4, so keep key content inside that crop. |
| Story | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | API: JPEG up to 8 MB, 9:16 recommended. Stories expire after 24 hours. |
| Profile picture | 320 × 320 | 1:1 | Per Hootsuite. |
Which size to use
For most feed posts, 1080 × 1350 (4:5) is the size to use. It’s the tallest ratio Instagram’s API accepts for feed images, so your photo takes up the most room on screen. Square 1080 × 1080 suits product shots and graphics, and 1080 × 566 (1.91:1) is the widest ratio the feed accepts.
The profile grid now previews posts at 3:4, which is slightly narrower than 4:5. Before you post, check that nothing important sits at the left or right edge; the 1080 × 1440 preset shows you the grid shape.
Stories use 1080 × 1920 (9:16). For your profile picture, a 320 × 320 square with the face or logo in the middle works well.
Instagram video limits
The resizer handles still images. For video, these are the limits to plan around.
| Use | Max length | Max file size | Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reel published via API | 15 minutes | 300 MB | 9:16 recommended (0.01:1 to 10:1 accepted) | 3 seconds minimum. MOV or MP4, up to 1920 px wide, 23 to 60 fps, video bitrate up to 25 Mbps. Cover image: JPEG up to 8 MB. Reels can't go inside carousels. |
| Reel recorded in the Instagram camera | 20 minutes | Not stated | 9:16 | Instagram added 20-minute recording to the Reels camera in November 2025. It says it only recommends Reels under 3 minutes to new audiences. |

Tips for Instagram images
- Instagram’s API takes JPEG images up to 8 MB for the feed and stories, so download as JPG.
- Feed images narrower than 320 or wider than 1440 pixels are scaled, so the 1080-wide presets are a safe choice.
- Choose Fit with background when a wide photo must stay whole in the 4:5 frame.
- Use the same size for every slide in a carousel so the swipe looks consistent.
