Posts on profiles and Pages stop at 3,000 characters. Check your draft, then make sure the opening lines earn the click on “see more”.

What counts toward the LinkedIn limit

LinkedIn Help puts the post limit at 3,000 characters, and Pages use the same composer, so the number is the same whether you post as yourself or as a company. Spaces, line breaks, emoji, hashtags and links all count.

The limit you notice first is the fold. The feed shows only the start of a post before “see more”, so the first line or two decide whether anyone reads on. For writing longer than 3,000 characters, LinkedIn points you to articles.

Other fields have their own limits: comments take up to 1,250 characters, poll questions 140 and each poll option 30. The headline (220), Page tagline (120) and article title (150) figures come from secondary sources rather than LinkedIn Help.

Hashtags can go in post text. The LinkedIn help pages we reviewed publish no hashtag limit. Stick to a few specific tags.

    Tips for LinkedIn posts

    • Write the first line as a complete thought that makes people want the rest.
    • Use short paragraphs with blank lines between them. Long blocks of text are hard to read on a phone.
    • Turn a slide deck into a document post to make a swipeable carousel.
    • Ask a question or run a poll to start a discussion, keeping each option within 30 characters.
    • Add alt text to every image. LinkedIn recommends keeping it under 120 characters, though the API accepts up to 4,086.

Publish LinkedIn posts that fit, on schedule

Postocial publishes to LinkedIn profiles and LinkedIn Pages. Write a fuller LinkedIn version of a post next to shorter versions for other networks, add a first comment or post a document carousel, then drop it into the next free slot in your queue.

On Premium and higher plans, comments on your LinkedIn Page posts come into the unified inbox with your other channels. See how Postocial works with LinkedIn.

    FAQ

    LinkedIn character limit questions

What is the character limit for a LinkedIn post?

3,000 characters, according to LinkedIn Help. Posts from LinkedIn Pages use the same composer and the same limit. For longer writing, LinkedIn suggests an article.

How long can a LinkedIn comment be?

    Up to 1,250 characters.

How many characters show before “see more” on LinkedIn?

The LinkedIn help pages we reviewed give no fixed number, and the cut depends on the screen and your line breaks. Assume only the opening line or two are visible and put your hook there.

What are the limits for LinkedIn polls?

A poll question can be up to 140 characters, with 2 to 4 options of up to 30 characters each.

How long can a LinkedIn headline be?

Secondary sources put the headline limit at 220 characters. LinkedIn Help doesn’t list it, so check in your profile editor if you’re right at the limit.
