What counts toward the TikTok limit
Hashtags and @mentions are part of the caption text, so they use characters like everything else. TikTok’s API picks them out when they are separated by spaces or new lines.
The number to plan for depends on how you post. Captions written in the TikTok app are widely reported at 4,000 characters, but anything posted through the Content Posting API, which is how scheduling tools publish, is held to 2,200. The API measures captions in UTF-16 runes, and many emoji take two of them, so leave headroom if your caption is close to the limit.
Photo posts work differently: they have a title of up to 90 characters and a description of up to 4,000.

Hashtags on TikTok
The API picks out hashtags and @mentions in the caption, separated by spaces or new lines, and they use caption characters. TikTok's posting API docs give no hashtag count limit. A few relevant tags work better than long lists.
Tips for TikTok posts
- Use the words people search for in your caption, and keep the first line punchy.
- Choose a handful of relevant hashtags instead of long generic strings.
- For photo posts, write a short title within 90 characters and put the detail in the description.
- Lead your 80-character bio with what you post about.
- Check each account’s maximum video length before you schedule, since it ranges from 3 to 10 minutes.
Publish TikTok posts that fit, on schedule
Postocial schedules TikTok posts from the same calendar as your other channels. Write the TikTok caption next to the Instagram and YouTube Shorts versions of the same video, put it in your posting queue and let it publish on time.
