What counts toward the Threads limit

Threads caps posts and replies at 500 characters. Spaces, line breaks, links and emoji all count. One detail matters near the limit: the Threads API counts emoji by their UTF-8 bytes, so an emoji can use more of the 500 than the single character you see here. If your post is close and uses emoji, leave a little room.

Links have their own rule. A post can contain up to five unique links, and since December 22, 2025 the API rejects posts with more.

For longer writing, Threads added text attachments on September 4, 2025. They hold up to 10,000 characters of long-form text alongside a short post.

    Hashtags on Threads

Threads uses topic tags, one per post. Through the API a topic tag is 1 to 50 characters, with no periods or ampersands. If a post has several in-text tags, only the first valid one is used.

    Tips for Threads posts

    • Keep the post itself short and conversational, and move the long version into a text attachment.
    • Add exactly one topic tag. If a post has several tags in the text, only the first valid one is used.
    • Stay at five links or fewer per post.
    • Answer replies quickly. Replies are posts too, with the same 500-character limit.
    • Through the API, each profile can publish 250 posts and 1,000 replies in 24 hours, and a carousel counts as one post.

Publish Threads posts that fit, on schedule

Postocial publishes to Threads alongside your other networks. Write the Threads version in the same composer as a longer LinkedIn or Facebook version, so each network gets text that fits, then schedule both at once. Replies from Threads come into the unified inbox on Premium and higher plans.

    FAQ

    Threads character limit questions

What is the character limit on Threads?

500 characters for posts and replies. Text attachments, added in September 2025, hold up to 10,000 characters of long-form writing.

Do emoji count as one character on Threads?

Not always. The Threads API counts emoji by their UTF-8 bytes, so an emoji can take more of the limit than it appears to. This counter counts each emoji as one, so leave a little room when you use several.

How many links can a Threads post have?

Up to five unique links. Since December 22, 2025 the API rejects posts with more.

How do hashtags work on Threads?

Threads uses topic tags, one per post. A tag can be 1 to 50 characters without periods or ampersands, and if you type several, only the first valid one is used.

Schedule Threads posts with a version that fits

Postocial keeps a separate version of each post for every network, so your Threads text can be exactly as long as it needs to be while other channels get their own. Try it free for 7 days.
