X character counter

X allows 280 weighted characters per post. Paste your draft to check it, then adjust for links and emoji as explained below.

Free, no sign-up. Your text stays in your browser.

Check your X text

Type or paste your text to see how it fits the 280-character post limit and the other X fields below. Characters are counted the way people see them, so an emoji with a skin tone is one.

What counts toward the X limit

X counts weighted characters, so the number X shows can be higher than the one you see here. Every link counts as 23 characters, however long or short it is. Each emoji and each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as 2. This counter counts every character as one, so adjust: for each link, use 23 instead of its real length, and add one for each emoji.

    Example: 230 characters of text, a space and a 60-character link show as 291 here, but X counts 230 + 1 + 23 = 254, so the post fits.

Subscribers can write longer posts of up to 25,000 characters (one older X help page still says 4,000). If the account you post from has no subscription, stay within 280 and split longer ideas into a thread. Profile fields have their own limits: 160 characters for the bio, 50 for the display name and 15 for the username.

X recommends no more than 2 hashtags per post, though more are allowed. Hashtags can't contain spaces or punctuation.

    Tips for X posts

    • Count each link as 23 characters and each emoji as 2 when you write to 280.
    • Use one or two hashtags at most, as X recommends.
    • Split longer ideas into a thread rather than cramming them into one post.
    • Attach up to four images and keep each under 5 MB.
    • On accounts without a subscription, keep video under 2 minutes 20 seconds.

Publish X posts that fit, on schedule

Postocial publishes to X with your own X API key. You pre-fund X developer credits, about $5 per 500 posts, and Postocial uses them to post on your schedule. Write the X version next to longer versions for LinkedIn or Facebook, or break it into a thread.

Postocial doesn’t show analytics for X. Learn how to connect X or see how Postocial works with X.
